Be the Counterweight

In meditation and reflection today, I was thinking about marriage.
How we desire our spouse to be this or that…
but are we willing to be this or that—
the counterweight?
I was watching an episode about building survival shelters. A man needed to move large rocks—hundreds of pounds each. To do it, he created a lever system. But for it to work, he needed a counterweight—other rocks—to balance and stabilize the system so the stones could be moved safely into place.
That stayed with me.
I began to think about my own expectations—what I want in my wife… this and that.
A wife that respects me.
But then the question came:
Am I the husband that loves her as Christ loves His bride?
Ephesians 5:25
Am I that counterweight that brings balance and stability?
Do I prioritize what’s needed in the relationship?
Do I carry vision… making room for growth?
It’s one thing to want.
It’s another thing to be.
So I had to ask myself:
Do I complain more than I pray?
Philippians 2:14
Do I argue more than I listen?
James 1:19
Do I consider more than I demand?
Philippians 2:3–4
It’s humbling when truth revealed is not just appreciated…
but obeyed.
Reading, meditating, memorizing, and even quoting God’s Word is good—
but it is only effective when you obey.
“Be doers of the word, and not hearers only…”
James 1:22
You can decree and declare all day,
but unless you obey, you’re just talking—
going nowhere, producing no promised results.
It sounds good—what we should do, what we could do—
but if the fruit doesn’t match, something is off.
“By their fruits you will know them.”
Matthew 7:16
So the call is simple:
Be the change you want.
Align yourself with God’s truth—
and let the results speak.
As my mother’s favorite song says:
“May the works I’ve done speak for me.”
Reflection
Are you asking more of others than you are willing to become yourself?
Closing Thought
Balance in relationships doesn’t come from demands…
it comes from alignment and responsibility before God.
