The Justice of God

By Manuel K. Davis

This morning I was watching Law & Order.
The defense attorney presented a strong case, and in reflection the district attorney realized it. One of his associates responded, “A good lawyer can find loopholes.”

That statement lingered in my thoughts.

Justice is supposed to be the righting of wrongs. Yet the best human systems can often offer is “guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.” Evidence must be presented. Witnesses examined. Motives questioned. The burden of proof rests upon the accused and the accuser alike.

But human justice is limited.

People lie.
Evidence gets overlooked.
The guilty sometimes go free.
And the innocent are sometimes condemned until new evidence surfaces or someone refuses to stop fighting for the truth.

Yet God is not limited by perception, manipulation, or loopholes.

God is a God of justice.

He is supreme over all powers and authorities. He sees everything and knows everything. Nothing escapes His sight. No hidden motive, no secret thought, no idle word.

The Psalmist declared:

“Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
and in Your book were written all the days that were ordained for me,
when as yet there was not one of them.”
— Psalm 139:16

Heaven keeps perfect records.

Every thought.
Every deed.
Every idle word.

Jesus said:

“But I tell you that men will give an account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken.”
— Matthew 12:36

I thought about the movie Minority Report, where people were judged for crimes not yet committed through a fictional system that could supposedly see the future.

But God is not fiction.
And He is not in the entertainment business.

He is holy.
He is just.
And He has no respect of persons.

God cannot be bribed.
He cannot be manipulated.
He cannot be extorted or influenced.

“The earth is the LORD’S, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.”
— Psalm 24:1

Yet in the midst of this reality, there is hope.

The Bible says Jesus willingly gave His life. He laid it down, and He was given power to take it up again.

Before His ascension, He prayed not only for His disciples, but for all who would believe through their testimony.

What they saw with their own eyes…
What they touched with their own hands…
The nail prints.
The resurrected Christ.
The ascension into glory.

Witnesses.

Jesus, our great High Priest, is now seated at the right hand of the Father making intercession day and night for those who belong to Him.

Hallelujah — He has already won the victory.

He is the way.
He is the truth.
He is the life.

The path has already been made.

This is why alignment and guidance matter so much. We are not called merely to survive this life leaning on our own understanding. We are called to walk under the instruction and guidance of God.

The Lord says:

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will guide you with My eye.”
— Psalm 32:8

God’s presence protects.
His presence preserves.
His presence provides.

And though it may seem at times like the wicked prosper without consequence, Scripture warns us not to lose heart or become envious.

“Do not fret because of evildoers…
for they shall soon be cut down like the grass.”
— Psalm 37:1–2

For after we have suffered a little while, we will see the end of all things clearly.

Nothing hidden will remain hidden.
Nothing unjust will escape His judgment.

Because God does not judge beyond a reasonable doubt.

He judges in absolute truth.

And yet through Jesus Christ, mercy still stands at the door calling, inviting, and interceding:

Come.
Repent.
Believe.
And live.

Excerpt

Human justice searches for evidence.
God searches the heart.

Courts may judge beyond a reasonable doubt, but nothing is hidden from the eyes of God. Every thought, every word, every action is fully known by Him. Yet in the midst of perfect justice, mercy still speaks through Jesus Christ — our advocate, our intercessor, and our hope.

There are loopholes in human systems.
There are none in truth.
